Born in Osaka into an artistic family, Kanako Abe began studying the piano at the age of two. She continued her studies at the Tokyo University of Fine Arts and Music before perfecting her skills at the Paris Conservatory of Music in the classes of analysis, writing, piano accompaniment and orchestration. At the same time she has an international career as a conductor and pianist. In particular, she has recorded a disc devoted to the solo piano works of Toru Takemitsu.
